![]() The end product of your design and the end user's needs should drive your overall process and solutions. The mission of the Northern Turnpike Connector Task Force is to evaluate the Northern Turnpike Connector corridor, which extends from the northern terminus of the Florida Turnpike northwest to the Suncoast Parkway. It helps to still sketch out the project in 2D and then move through the OpenRoads design process using the 3D tools. Set up each project and identify your workflow upfront for a smooth design process. It also allows for multiple team members to work on a project concurrently without having to create unnecessary "working" copies of files. We bring all these files together in master modeling files to ensure everything is working/displaying as expected. For large projects with multiple alignments, we elected to set up files for each alignment and a separate file for each corridor model along those alignments. The design is now performed in the drawing/modeling space making it important to break your projects up to facilitate a logical workflow. File Structure and Workflow Management for the Winįile Structure is the workflow for OpenRoads. Vertical alignment needs to come up to avoid utility? Again, using the vertical alignment tools in OpenRoads makes quick work of the issue while providing immediate 3D feedback of the changes to the overall road model. The client changes the pavement structure? No worries, a simple update to the template library and you're done. If you've spent the time to develop your workspace, alignment, template libraries, and civil cells properly then changes are relatively easy. 3D is a tool to help you communicate your design effectively from inception through construction. Communicate concepts by capturing short videos showing 360 degrees of a particular issue. Get your clients on a screen share to discuss designs and solutions, provide a drive through during meetings, and demonstrate different options by toggling various models throughout a review meeting. They will lose some of their "feel" if a simple isometric shot is captured and shared with clients. Static Images Will Not Cut It for 3DģD models are meant to be driven, examined and rotated. We make mistakes, but we make them quicker, with OpenRoads. No need to be afraid of committing a cardinal sin in OpenRoads, undo will save you back to safety. The Undo/Redo is one of the best working functions in OpenRoads! Anyone coming from the GeoPAK background involved in overwriting critical ".gpk" data (is the redefine button on?) can experience commitment issues to changes and iterations, hence the ever-growing library of "working" or "dated" files found in their file system. Our team learned best when they were teaching others along the way. Take various problems the design team is solving and assign training responsibilities to your team to teach lessons learned along the way. It may sound inefficient, but the best way to learn is to get going on a project and dive in deep. YouTube, Bentley videos, Google, and discussion forums have almost all the information you could need. Self Training is Some of the Best Training In the early days, you will have to lean on resources provided by Bentley and limited DOT data ( FDOT and TxDOT have resources available.) Beyond the basics, it is on you and your team to build what you need, which brings us to the next lesson. It takes time to build up the libraries of data to support OpenRoads technology properly (templates, civil cells, etc.). ![]() If your state DOT is coming from a GeoPAK background, be prepared to modify tools and create new preferences. ![]() The key to making OpenRoads run like you expect is to set up the workspace properly and tuning it to your needs. Given Six Hours to Chop a Tree, Spend the First Four Sharpening the Axe Spend the time to understand the limitations of OpenRoads technology to best fit your needs. Plan on an investment in yourself, your team, your IT department, and client expectations to get everything pointed the right direction. What? You mean to tell me software right out of the box doesn't perform exactly like all the demonstrations showed at the trade shows? This software was supposed to save me time/money and work flawlessly from the get-go, right? Wrong. Below are some of the lessons we learned along the way. We've spent the past year delivering all our Texas transportation design projects using Bentley's OpenRoads technology.
